I realized it's been a while since I nagged you appropriately about your "greenness," as it were. So pardon me while I hop up on my soap box for just a minute.
One if my single biggest pet peeves is plastic shopping bags. Please don't use them. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS! Yes, folks, BYOB isn't just about the booze---it's about the unfortunate situation our poor planet has found itself in.
So many stores sell their own reusable bags now, and at such cheap prices, you have no excuse.
Therefore, I hereby challenge you to:
1.) Get your own set of reusable bags. Store them in your car, stash one or two in your purse, briefcase, gym bag, diaper bag, etc. My favorite for my purse is this one by Flip & Tumble because it balls up really small, but also holds a ton of stuff. If I keep one in my purse, it saves me from having to run back out to my car in case I forget my regular bags.
2.) Promise yourself that if you're in the check-out line and you've left your bags in the car that you will: (a) run back out to your car even if everyone gives you the Evil Eye; or (b) buy another few reusable bags from wherever you are--if available; or (c) ask for paper bags (which aren't innocent, either, but at least they are biodegradable); and (d) grovel at my feet and beg for mercy. If you only have a few things, see if you can just carry them out or stuff them in your purse. I have never understood people who walk away with a can of shaving cream or a single loaf of bread in a plastic bag. Seriously stupid. Seriously wasteful, ignorant, and lazy.**It should go without saying that these bags are not just for your groceries. Take them to Target. Take them to the mall. Use them for all of your shopping!
3.) Earn extra brownie points by going to http://www.etsy.com/ and doing a search for "reusable produce bags." These are some of the ones I really like.
4.) Stop buying and drinking things that come in plastic bottles---water, soft drinks, sports drinks, etc. Invest in a Brita or a Pur filter for your water, because bottled water is the worst offense ever. If you insist upon drinking things in plastic, at least reevaluate how frequently you're drinking/buying them. Reduce where you can.
These are very simple, but very effective ways to go green. I suggest starting small and doing things gradually so you don't feel completely overwhelmed. If you already do these and/or you're ready to move forward, think about:
1.) Recycling. Yes, I'm referring to those blue bins you leave at the curb. Check with your local recycling company to make sure you have a comprehensive list of what you can and can't recycle at the curb. Make sure you realize that you can recycle the cardboard rolls in the middle of your paper towels & toilet paper. And empty cereal boxes. Empty Kleenex boxes. Newspapers. Other paper. Cans. Plastic bottles. You know the drill!
2.) Check out http://www.terracycle.net/ for ways to recycle commonplace things like kids' juice pouches, chip bags, cookie bags, yogurt cups, and much more. Terracycle takes your trash and turns it into cash for the charity/school of your choice. I have started up a Juice Pouch Brigade for my temple. Terracycle takes these items and uses them to make cool things like tote bags, back packs, lunch kits, and much much more. Either contribute to a brigade elsewhere or consider starting up one of your own!
3.) Think of new uses for old things. Instead of putting it in the trash, can someone else use it? Can you donate it, list it on EBay or Craig's List? Can you give it a second life? Really think each time you put something in your trash can.
4.) Use fewer paper towels. I despise paper towels. Yes, they are sometimes a necessary evil, but more often than not you can get by with some sponges, rags, towels, etc. I used to take a piece of fruit, rinse it, then lay it on a paper towel to cut it up for the kids' breakfast. Now I rinse it and cut it right onto their plates instead. So many habits are so ingrained in us that they're automatic and we don't even think before we do it. Use your brain. Start to think.
If you are laughing at this or thinking I'm a raving mad green lunatic, please promptly educate yourself about the floating landfill in our Pacific Ocean that is chock full of plastic bags and lots of other fun things we humans use.
Remember when I asked you to think? Think next time you throw out those plastic rings that hold your 6-pack of Cokes together. Next time, take a moment to get your scissors out and snip all the rings/compartments. Otherwise defenseless creatures such as this poor turtle suffer immeasurably. Go here to see/read more about how our plastic affects wildlife (not just our planet).

That poor, poor turtle!
We do the re-usable water bottles really because I'm to cheap to buy water..really, buy water..when you already pay for it from you sink..seriously?
I'm guilty regarding the shopping bags..it's terrible and I ALWAYS intend to buy some 'green' bags but never have.
I. WILL. TRY. HARDER.
Good stuff and I am trying - I'm much better now than before. I even compost! Here's my question - what's the best way to dispose of kitty litter? That's what I use the plastic bags for...
We are all about our cloth grocery bags and I am not sure how we got so many, but I am not complaining. The thing I like is how much better the groceries are packed in them, too. I haven't used paper towels for years and we have really cool cloth napkins...they are much pretty and softer wiping all the stuff I drool all over myself at a meal than a scratchy napkin is!
Great, tips, though....and I love the pic of the soapbox!
You are so awesome!
1. I have reusable grocery bags. I use them all the time! Ralph's give you five points for each reusable bag you use!
2. I recycle religiously.
3. I use dishtowels whenever I can instead of paper towels. Then throw them in the wash when I'm done.
4. I snip all my plastic rings! My friends make fun of me, but I always give them a dirty look and tell them I'm doing my part to save the dolphins. :)
Thank you for this wonderful post and bringing this important issue to the forefront of our thoughts.
I do have reusable bags, however I am guilty of forgetting them OFTEN and then using the plastic. HOWEVER I do recycle them! I am <3ing the ones you linked to.
We recycle as much as we can. I even have Goose saying, "Mom, that can be recycled"
That poor, poor turtle. My husband thinks I am nuts when I dig through the trash to find those darn rings just to snip them!!!
Now listen...
I posted a while back about being green! I wish I knew how to link stuff in the comments!
However, yours was much more realistic than mine. I believe one of mine was, "Burp and fart more indoors than out."
As far as that turtle goes, that thing is legit. I mean, it totally looks like a greyhound turtle! Now ask yourself, is that really something you want to prevent?
I've made my own cloth veggie bags out of a thin cloth for $1.50! One yard made 6 bags and I never need more than that.
That poor, poor turtle! It makes me sad just to look at him.
Oh my gosh..that poor turtle!!
Thanks for the great reminders!
I have my own set of bag too! Yeah! And what's even better is almost every one of them I got for FREE. Check your local grocery store. Many times for buying the products you would buy anyway, if you buy one more than you were going to that day, FREE bag. I even have a free bag from ABC Liquors for buying $30 of wine on a day when my favorite was on sale.
Just sayin' not that difficult people. Really!
I plan to make a purchase of some reusable bags here very soon. I don't like throwing away plastic bags, and really, the reusable bags seem much sturdier and my boxes won't be poking through them. If you use a reusable bags at Target, they'll take 5 cents off for every bag you use. That seems worth it to me too.
We've been recycling since I was a kid, I do it without thinking much about it. My daughter's school is a Zero Waste school; everything is recycled or turned into compost- each class has one to two garden beds where they grow flowers and veggies. They also have water filters in each classroom, the kids keep their own reusable cups and plates (for party days) in class. They are no longer allowed to bring bottled water to school; I'm really happy that they're learning so young!
Big Sis--you are a no-reply blogger, so I couldn't respond to you directly.
I have no idea about kitty litter. Yikes. I use the bags my newspapers come in to scoop dog poop (and they are the only plastic bags I "take"). I guess those are things that there's just no way around, unfortunately.
Poor turtle!
I don't drink things from plastic at least. And I always cut up our soda rings.
But yeah, I will probably continue using the plastic bags at the store. But I reuse them! I put dirty diapers in there and the cat poop. So I'm not just throwing them out at least :)
I do have some reusable bags that I'll occasionally bring in a store if I know I won't be buying much. But groceries are so much easier to just use the plastic bags.
Great post! I've seen that photo of the turtle before as well as that huge swirl of plastic the size of Texas out in the ocean. I have never looked at plastic the same since. I no longer ignore that garbage floating by my yard considering it someone else's problem. It's everyone's problem and I pick up every bit of plastic and crap I see on the street picturing that poor turtle not to mention the countless other creatures that get caught up in our garbage that has no business being in their environment in the first place!
Thanks for making a bit of room on that soap box for me!
Very good points for everyone to remember. We use reusable bags, don't buy water bottles whenever possible, but I am still bad with the paper towels. I need to work on that. And the kitty litter...yeah have to have bags for that.
you are a girl after my own heart. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this! my hubby and i strive every.single.day to live the green life. we BYOB, ask for paper bags if we forget...which in turn we use to put our recycling into under our kitchen sink...which we then recycle WITH our recycling when it gets full. perfect!
we also buy recycled paper towels, which after we use, we recycle.
did you know tin foil is recyclable?
you ROCK my dear :)
I like the look and shoulder strap of the flip and tumble...hadn't known about it til now. I swear by Baggu bags. they ROCK!
Erin, this is quite impressive. We've always recycled, but not to this extent. After reading all the articles in those links, I am really educated now. The saying is true, that you learn something new every day.
I never heard of the floating garbage pile in the Pacific, and who knew about up-cycling and down-cycling, or that things can only be recycled so many times. The center of toilet paper and paper towels rolls? Juice drinks and other things? Wow.
Thanks for a very informative and educational article.
One question for you....should we remove the caps from the plastic and glass bottles before putting them into the recycle bin?
I have started using reusable shopping bags lately and feel bad that I didn't before.
I saw someone in the store a few months ago who keeps all of hers on one of those carabiner-type things and then clips that to the shopping cart.
What an easy way to keep them all together and gets rid of my excuse, that it's too hard to gather up all my bags to bring in with me, along with my 3 kids.
But, that clip makes it so so easy.
It's a process-trying harder every day. I plan on checking out your links.
Excellent post.
Erin, that turtle breaks my heart!
We can all use a kick in the butt. Thank you!
We really have been trying to be more green and honestly I was shocked that after we started recycling we could cut out about a whole can at the curb just from recycling what we can!
I'm trying to get myself in the habit of the bags but it's been a slow start. Maybe you're green kick in the pants will help!
i try to do some of this stuff, but i know i can do better. i recently read an article in rolling stone about that garbage "patch" in the ocean. HORRIFYING.
i have to admit that i get the plastic bags in the grocery store. i use them when cleaning out the litter box. but maybe there is a better solution?
I was enjoying the view from your soapbox until I saw that poor turtle. That just breaks my heart. I already do many green things around here but I am going to step it up for Mr. Turtle and all of his little friends.
XO
Leigh
I am not much of a green gal, but my daughter is in the green club at school and she does her part, does that count??
Preach it, Sister! I have been anti-plastic bag since WAY before it was cool,,,clerks used to look at me like I was a crazy person when I came in with cloth bags. I still struggle with always remembering to bring the bags into the store, though...I usually have to leave the checkout line to run out to the car to get them--but nine times out of ten I do, because it is important! Great post!
Ow! That poor turtle!
I have about 1000 reusable bags...keep forgetting them and have to buy another doh!
I don't litter...
I have my own drink bottle and I don't use paper towels. But I have 4 kids and one is pooping its way through an entire landfill of diapers. Sorry.
That is a very scary picture!
I have already given up plastic water bottles. I bought a sink mounted filter and a stainless steel bottle. I also do as many things as I can to be more "green" however I can't stop using plastic grocery bags. We have cats and the litter has to be scooped every day because we have a small condo and it would be atrocious otherwise. Try as I might, I can't convince my daughter to carry the lumps down to the dumpster in her hands. I reuse the grocery bags for that because I figure at least I'm reusing them. If someone has a better solution, I'd love to hear it!
We are doing our best. I promise. I'm trying to cut down on the paper towels. It's wasteful and expensive! But my husband uses so many of them and I put them in the kids' lunches and snacks. If I sent cloth, I would never get them back. Trust me. I have lost many ice packs and containers to the school trash can.
I do use canvas bags and recycle. We all have aluminum water bottles, too.
If that's a girl turtle, she's the envy of the sea with a skinny waist like that. :)
I have re-useable grocery bags, it's amazing that more people don't use them.
I also have gotten in the habit of using a bigger purse. If I go into the store to purchase a small amount of things I just put them in my purse - of couse I pay for them first!!!
Charisse
Coffee (my necessary evil) is straight from the pot, or even from Dunkin Donuts, right into my reusable mug.
We don't do enough, but I'm happy to say we have made the little steps a habit: i.e. recycling cans; separating paper and plastic into the bins; we don't use bottled water, Bubba Kegs work better; instead of tossing old ruined clothes I cut them up for rags around the house/garage; we use the reusable bags unless buying meat...I can't have it dripping meat juice all over my ride; and my favorite is making my boys hang their towels to dry instead of washing a load every night!
You get up on that soap box any time you like. We need to be reminded every now and then ;-)
Thanks for sharing this. I try and be extremely careful about what even goes in my trash can and never litter. I get so p'o'd when smokers toss their butts. Birds have been known to eat those and die.
I also wanted to pop over and let you know there is an award for you on my blog. Happy Day hon and keep on, keeping on!
We have the resuable bags and they are great when I remember to take them with me... I am a papertowel whore... I do admit that. BUT I don't use napkins. Does that help a little ;o)
I'd love to do the blue recycle bin if it didn't cost me so damn much money. It more than my trash service! We don't buy plastic waterbottles anymore. We have A water bottle that we refill, wash and refill...we do take cans to be recycled and we unplug appliances that aren't being used as to save on energy. We use those funky lightbulbs here and there too...energy waste is important to prevent too!
What a well written, heart felt post! You can tell how dedicated to being green you are. The ways I am green tend to focus around saving money and being natural. I do cloth diapers and wipes, an aluminum water bottle, cloth towels instead of paper, diva cup and mama cloth, garage sale shop for everything, eco-friendly cleaners and laundry detergent, dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, and lowered thermostat.
Unfortunately, we do not recycle. But we are going to start! I do use the reusable grocery bags though, when I remember. I must do better!
Thanks for the great information, and the inspiration to do better for our world! I am linking to this post and trying to spread the word!
Oh my god! That poor turtle.
I've blogged about that floating pile of garbage in the pacific before! Great minds...
And I do most of this... And just for your I'm going to use more washable rags instead of paper towls (which I've been guilty of using a bit more of than I should lately because I'm lazy).
You should make BYOB t-shirts.
little changes CAN yield big results.
that said, after finding algae in my brita filter, i'm back on bottled water... (forgive me!)
These are great tips and I'm SO glad you wrote about this! As I said, the plastic bags drive me CUH-RAZY!!
I didn't know about recycling all that other stuff though, I'm going to have to look into that! Thanks!
I'm feelin ya Sista! I hate plastic bags! Ugh, can't stand to see one in my house. I have sooo many reusable bags it is ridiculous, because I so often forget my bags at home and have to buy a few more. My whole family (including grandma) have stainless steel water bottles now. Water taste so much better in them too!
And that poor turtle. OMG!
Thanks for these reminders!! I sometimes freak out about the whole bottled water thing. What a waste!!!
Amen! I am blessed to live in an area that is way ahead of the curve in recycling. We can recycle everything at the curb - including food waste - which goes straight into the yardwaste container to be turned into mulch. And bags? I just cleaned out my mother in law's house - she had more plastic bags than I've ever seen in my life. Grocery, vegetable, newspaper, ziplocs - thousands of them. Everything was in plastic. It was sad. Thanks for this post.

That was a FANTASTIC post. I know (and do) these things) but a little reminder/kick in the butt when you feel like being lazy is always great...your words will ring in my ears!

I really should bring my own! I get SO MANY groceries though! I'd need like 15!, a bag just to carry all my bags!
